World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series invades Salina Highbanks Speedway on April 29

SALINA, OKLA. — April 21, 2016 — Salina Highbanks Speedway will again host the only World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series race in the state of Oklahoma in 2016. The event is set for Friday, April 29 and will mark the fifth time the series has raced at the ultra-fast three-eighths-mile. The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series first visited Sooner State during the series inaugural 1978 season.

Shane Stewart, who was born and raised in nearby Bixby, scored a very emotional win at Salina Highbanks Speedway last year. The victory was his first at the track and came in front of numerous family and friends, many of whom only get to see him race once or twice each year. Stewart took the lead from Brad Sweet on lap-11 and was out front for the remainder of the 25-lap contest. A total of three drivers led laps during the main event. Stewart heads into this year’s race at Salina, second in points, with one win and is tied for the series lead with 16 top-10 finishes through April 18.

Fellow Oklahoma native Daryn Pittman from Owasso, has been the most consistent driver in the previous four World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races at Salina Highbanks Speedway. Pittman finished third last year and was also on the podium in 2013. He ran fourth in the inaugural series event at the track in 2011 and was seventh in 2014, as he chases his first win at Salina. Pittman, the 2013 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion, has won three races this season, including the last two of the recent West Coast Swing for the series.

Joey Saldana won at Salina Highbanks Speedway in 2014. The driver of the No. 83 machine for Roth Motorsports has been one of the most consistent drivers this season and is currently fifth in the standings. The first two World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races at Salina Highbanks Speedway in 2011 and 2013 were both won by Craig Dollansky.

Thus far in 2016, seven drivers, representing the top-seven positions in the point standings, have been victorious with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Brad Sweet, the current series point leader and seven-time and defending series champion Donny Schatz, have each won five races. Pittman is next in line with three victories, while Stewart, Saldana, Jason Johnson and David Gravel each have one win thus far in 2016.

In the point standings, Sweet is on top of the leaderboard, as he chases his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series title and the second for Kasey Kahne Racing. Stewart is currently second in points, followed by Schatz, Pittman and Saldana.
A solid contingent is following the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series full-time in 2016, including veteran drivers Paul McMahan, Jason Sides and Terry McCarl, as well as young guns Logan Schuchart and Jacob Allen, who are teammates at Shark Racing. Greg Wilson from Ohio is the leading contender for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award this season.
