Shane Stewart Shines at Knoxville: Picks Up First Win of 2008
Ever since Shane Stewart and his team rolled out a new car a couple of weeks ago, they have been blazing fast.
After coming close a couple of times to picking up their first A-Feature win of the season with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, they broke through on Friday night at Knoxville Raceway in the Mediacom Shootout to take the win with the cameras from SPEED capturing all of the action.
Stewart, who started fifth in the 25-lap contest charged around two-time defending series champion and current series point leader Donny Schatz for the lead on the back straightaway with just four laps to go. He would pull away from there, en route to the $10,000 triumph. On top of that, he was also awarded $5,000 on Friday night for winning the inaugural Qwik Liner Cup, which went to the driver that earned the most points in time trials over the course of the first 13 events of the season.
“It feels great,” said the 2005 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year from Victory Lane. “We have been knocking on the door the last five or six nights. I can’t say thanks enough to Dennis and Teresa (Roth). It just feels great to break through. Dennis kept saying if you put yourself in the right position, then you’ll start winning races. Hopefully there are many more to come. I think this team has more wins underneath its sail and hopefully we can keep this good streak going.”
On a restart with seven laps to go, Stewart, driving a Steve Kent built machine, looked high for a way around Schatz on consecutive laps as the pair exited the second turn and again the fourth turn. The next lap he even looked low off the fourth turn, before the final caution flag of the night waved. On the ensuing restart, Stewart kept pace with Schatz and on the next lap he made his move to take the lead and ultimately the win.
“To pass the (No.) 15 at this track feels great,” Stewart said. “Those guys, as everyone knows are on their ‘A-Game’ night in and night out, especially here. Steve Kent has done a great job for us in the car department and Paul Kistler has been just as good in the motor department. Bonzai (Bruns- crew chief) and Kevin (Loveys) have also been doing working very hard and doing a great job.”
Stewart, who won the third heat race, was patient with his car at the start of the A-Feature on Friday night, as he waited for the car and the track to come to him. Late in the race, he by far had the fastest machine on the track, as he searched for a way around Schatz.
“I was going to be good as long we he didn’t move up,” shared the native of Bixby, Oklahoma. “If he moved up, I was going to be in trouble. My car late in the race, once I got the fuel load off was awesome. I could really put it anywhere. The track really became racy at the end. Early in the race I was really tight, and I thought if I could hold on, once we got to lapped traffic we could give him a run for the money.”
Stewart has been one of the most consistent drivers over the last two weeks, as he has racked up five Top-Five finishes in the last six races. After consecutive third-place runs last weekend, he broke into the Top-10 in the World of Outlaws championship standings and with his win on Friday night at Knoxville gained another spot in the points.
“We have been racing and I think that’s the main thing,” explained Stewart of his team gaining momentum. “We are able to get four or five races in and not have two weeks off in between. I hope we can keep it going.”
The race began with Brooke Tatnell leading from the pole, with Terry McCarl using the high side of the track to charge from fourth to second, but a red flag after Brian Paulus got upside led to a complete restart. On the second start Tatnell again used a strong jump to open a slight advantage. The caution flag waved on the third lap when Terry McCarl who was running third came to a stop in the fourth turn with a broken driveline.
Tatnell continued to lead on the next restart, with Schatz, who was second, closing in on him as the leaders approached lapped traffic. Stewart began to pressure Schatz at the same time. At the halfway point of the race, Schatz looked low on Tatnell a couple of times for the leading off of the second turn. This allowed Stewart to close right up on the leaders
Schatz dove under Tatnell coming off the second turn on the 18th lap to take the lead. A puff of smoke came from Tatnell’s machine on the back stretch and by the time he entered the third turn, his engine had expired, ending his night.
On the restart with seven laps to go, Stewart kept pace with Schatz and tried the high side of the track exiting turn four a number of times. A caution on the 20th lap set up a five lap shootout between Schatz and Stewart.
The restart saw Schatz continue to lead, with Stewart using the high side of the track to make up ground. As he powered his way past Schatz on the back straightaway with four laps to go, there was some slight contact between the cars. From there, he would pull away to earn his third career A-Feature win with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws and fifth overall career win at Knoxville.
Schatz, who is chasing his third consecutive World of Outlaws title finished second aboard the Armor All J&J. He remains the only driver that has finished in the Top-10 in all 15 events this season.
“It is one of those nights that I am glad is over with,” said the native of Fargo, North Dakota. “I’m glad we were in a position to win. We just weren’t quite good enough. When I pushed out for the feature, I couldn’t make any speed like I had the rest of the night and I don’t know why. We’re chasing something somewhere and we’ll get it figured out tonight and definitely have it fixed for tomorrow.”
Jason Meyers began the night by turning the fastest lap in time trials of the 53 cars that took to the famed half-mile. In the A-Feature, he lined up seventh and after losing a spot on the first lap, steadily worked his way back to the front. He first battled Joey Saldana before setting his sights on Jac Haudenschild. After trading the fifth spot with Haudenschild a couple of times, Meyers was able to get around the veteran driver before passing Tony Bruce Jr. late. He would finish third in the GLR Investment KPC.
“We were able to pass a few,” said Meyers. “We were really tight early. I thought this thing would get slicker than it did. Coming from seventh to third on that track was very difficult and that’s a good comeback. We didn’t get to draw for the dash and that hurt us. We’ll come back tomorrow night and hopefully set quick time again and get up front in the dash.”
Bruce finished a season-best fourth at Knoxville on Saturday night, after winning the fourth heat race. It was his third career Top-Five finish with the World of Outlaws. He ran second early in the race, before Schatz and Stewart got around him.
“We were pretty good tonight,” said the sophomore driver, who pilots the Best Well Service Maxim. “I thing we were a little too tight, and anytime you make a mistake with these guys, they pounce on you. We’ve been struggling with qualifying and tonight was proof that if you qualify up front and start up front that we can run up front. Starting 18th or 19th with these guys each night is not going to get it done.”
Jac Haudenschild picked up his fifth Top-Five finish of the season aboard the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim as came home fifth.
Joey Saldana had a very trying night as his team has to change engines three times, as well as change a rear end. He persevered and finished a very solid sixth in the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI.
Danny Lasoski, the 2001 World of Outlaws champion was seventh driving for Guy Forbrook.
Sam Hafertepe Jr. picked up the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award after starting 16th and finishing eighth in the G.H. Plumbing J&J. He drove the majority of the 25-lap contest with no power steering.
Tim Shaffer was ninth in the Casey’s General Store Maxim, with Craig Dollansky rounding out the Top-10 in the Auto Value Parts Stores Maxim.
After being second quickest in time trials, Schatz finished second in the second heat to earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash, where he was third. Early in the 25-lap race, Schatz has the fastest car on the track, as he turned the quickest lap of the 24 drivers that took to the track on the sixth circuit.
“Once I could get my speed wound up, I could keep it wound up,” said Schatz. “It took me more than three laps, which is odd for the way our program is set up. It was to Shane’s (Stewart) advantage and good on him. He did a good job and drove right by us. He did what he was supposed to. He was a little faster than us at the end, and if we wouldn’t have had those yellows, it may have been a little different, but I’m not one to get something handed to me. We wanted to earn it and tonight we didn’t and they did.”
Meyers rebounded very well at Knoxville after suffering a flat tire at Eldora Speedway last Saturday night which cost him the series points lead. He leads the series with 12 Top-Five finishes.
“I told the guys when we got here today, that the tire going flat last week had nothing to do with us and with how fast this race team is and there was no reason why we shouldn’t come back out tonight and be just as fast,” shared the native of Clovis, California. “They did just that. I am really proud of these guys keeping their head up and we have a tough road ahead. We have to catch Donny (Schatz) and we have to get that point lead back.”
The first night of the Mediacom Shootout was taped for broadcast on SPEED on Sunday, June 15.

For his qualifying effort, Meyers earned five bonus points.
