RACE REPORT: Kinser Wins Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway

alt

Silver Celebration: Kinser Leads Wire to Wire to Win Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway

While he is no stranger to Victory Lane at Lernerville Speedway in Pennsylvania with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, having won 16 career A-Feature as he entered the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup on Tuesday night, it had been 14 years since Steve Kinser was victorious in the prestigious event, which honors the late track owner and promoter. That all changed on Tuesday night, as he led the 40-lap race from wire-to-wire to claim an event record $40,000 top prize.

Kinser started on the pole after winning the Crane Cams Dash and was challenged early by Craig Dollansky before Jason Meyers set his sights on the leader. Kinser held them as well as Donny Schatz at-bay, to pick up the 546th A-Feature win of his career with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.

“It feels good to win,” said Kinser. “We haven’t won all that many this year, so any win is good. I’ve been coming out here for a lot of years and this is a unique place. You always race against the best race drivers there are, when you come out East. You can win a race tonight and struggle to make the race or miss it the next night, that’s how tough it is.”

The race began with Kinser charging into the first turn on the low side of the track, with Dollansky, who had gotten around Meyers chasing him. On the third lap, Dollansky nearly was even with Kinser on the front straightaway, as the pair closed in on lapped traffic. They were in traffic on the fifth lap, with Kinser slicing through the slower machines using the middle of the track. At one point, he was three-wide with lapped cars, using a masterful move to split them and open a slight advantage over Dollansky.

Meyers charged around Dollansky on the high side of turn four on the ninth lap in traffic to take the second position. The leaders were engulfed in heavy traffic for a number of laps, with Kinser moving up the track a slight bit, as he continued to slice his way through the slower machines.

“I tried to stick on the bottom, but I was losing speed down there,” he explained. “I never really ran that high. I figured I would run the middle and if it happens, it happens. On the restarts, it took me about three laps to get it lit up. It was a fine line to hit it right and get what drive you could out there. When you are leading, you don’t know if someone is dusting the top off, where they can get a little more speed. You don’t want to change your line a whole lot. I was glad to see the checker come out.”

By the 15th lap, Kinser had opened a very large lead as he was able to clear a number of the slower machines, while Meyers and Dollansky were held up a bit. The first caution of the night flew on the 17th lap, which gave Meyers a chance to battle Kinser on the restart.

On the restart, Meyers looked to the high side of the track exiting the third and fourth turns, but could not quite make a pass. The caution flag flew again, setting up another restart situation, with Kinser using a strong restart to pull away from Meyers.

After a lap 26 caution, Meyers used a strong restart to stay with Kinser for a couple of laps. On the 27th lap, he used a slide job exiting the fourth turn to inch ahead of Kinser. Meyers would slip up the track just enough that Kinser was able to get back even with him and power his way down the front straightaway to officially be scored the leader at the line. The next lap, there was a red flag, giving the crews an opportunity to work on their machines, as it was an open red.

“We made a front shock change, but that is about it,” Kinser said. “I left the car pretty much the way it was. During the red, everyone had some time for the tires to cool down and they took off pretty good. We took off ok as well.”

The restart came with 12 laps to go and Kinser again jumped quickly to a comfortable lead, with Meyers chasing him. With nine laps to go, the final caution of the night flew for Craig Dollansky, who was running third, for a right rear tired that was packed with mud.

Donny Schatz battled Meyers for a number of laps after the restart for the second spot, with the two-time defending series champion taking it with five laps to go. At this point, Kinser had a sizeable lead and was able to maneuver through lapped traffic during the last two laps to pick up his third A-Feature win of the season. He has finished in the Top-Five in seven of the last Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series events, as he is solidly in the fifth spot in championship points.

“We’ve been running in the Top-Five since Cedar Lake (Speedway on June 29),” the 20-time series champion shared. “We have been really consistent and running strong.”

For Schatz, the runner-up finish was his 25th Top-Five finish of the season. He remains the only driver that has finished in the Top-10 in each and every race this season as he chases his third consecutive series title. He lined up fifth aboard the Armor All J&J and fell back to seventh early in the race, before working his way around Shane Stewart and Chad Kemenah. He then got around Terry McCarl on the 13th lap to move into fourth.

“It’s better than where we were,” said Schatz. “I thought we would be able to get the job done. We didn’t get going until too late. You make mistakes and I have been making a lot here lately and it’s time to clean up the act.”

Jason Meyers finished third to pick up his fourth consecutive podium finish. He started third in the GLR Investments KPC and lost a spot to McCarl on the opening lap, before regaining it on the third lap. He then worked on Dollansky for the second position. It was his 23rd Top-Five finish of the season as he remains second in the championship standings.

“We are right there, and the guys are doing a great job,” said Meyers. “The motors are running well and we have a great package right now. We just need a little bit more and just keep missing it a little bit. I take the blame for that tonight. I made the wrong call on the red flag, but at the same time, you give him (Kinser) an open red and he’ll be hard to beat. It was another great run for the team. Hopefully we can get one of these soon. I am getting tired of holding bouquets at the end of the night.”

Joey Saldana wound up fourth in the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI, after lining up 16th. Kerry Madsen was fifth in the TK Concrete Maxim, with Chad Kemenah who began the night by setting fast time in time trials in sixth, piloting the Kantor Oil Company Maxim. Shane Stewart was seventh aboard the Roth Motorsports KPC, with Greg Hodnett in eighth, driving the Macri Concrete J&J. Kraig Kinser finished ninth, after lining up 20th to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award in the Bass Pro Shops Maxim. Jeff Shepard rounded out the Top-10 in the Zemco Speed Equipment Maxim.

After losing a few spots early in the race, Schatz used every one of the 40 laps to chase down the leaders as he was looking to add to his two consecutive Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup wins. He has 11 consecutive Top-Five finishes, as the series continues their second East Coast swing of the season with two nights of racing at Williams Grove Speedway this weekend.

“It’s fun to have a slick track, but there was virtually nothing to get a hold of in the corners or anywhere,” commented the North Dakota native. “That kind of makes it tough for anyone to pass. The track was actually pretty decent, we just needed to be a little bit better early on and I wasn’t. That’s my fault and that’s how racing goes some times. We got out of here with a little money and there is still a lot of money left this week.”

Schatz and his crew didn’t make too many changes during the red flag. He restarted in fourth and was closing in on Dollansky when the latter stop on the back straightaway bringing out the caution.

“We didn’t change anything that was detrimental,” he said. “We had a Jacobs ladder that was broken that we fixed, but other than that, we didn’t really make any changes to the car.”

Prior to the red flag on the 29th lap, Meyers had gained a significant amount of ground on Kinser and that is when he inched ahead coming off the fourth turn, though he slipped high on the track and could not quite complete the pass as the pair charged down the front straightaway.

“I was hoping I would have another run at him,” he shared. “I had a little bit better line in (turns) one and two than he had. After the red, he was able to move up into the line that we had. You get a chance to talk to your crew and you can move your line a little bit. It’s kind of unfortunate, but we’ll take another third-place run and head for the Grove (Williams Grove Speedway).”

Like a number of the other drivers running at the front of the field, Meyers found Lernerville Speedway to be very tricky on Tuesday night. He won at the track back in May and has two career victories at the four-tenths mile located just outside of Pittsburgh.

“It was really tough to pass here tonight,” he noted. “Usually the exits of the corners have a couple of grooves and sometime the straightaways do. Tonight it was just slick all the way through that you could not get a run on anyone on the backstretch to try to make a pass. It was definitely slicker than normal tonight.”

The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Friday, July 19 at Williams Grove Speedway for the opening night of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals.
