Haubstadt, IN — Fourth of July Weekend Ends with a Bang for Dollansky: Wins Second Race in Last Three Starts & Sixth on the Season
Craig Dollansky and Steve Kinser are the only current Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series drivers that have won with the series at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana.
They had combined to win the last three stops for the series at the always racy track prior to this weekend, with that trend continuing on Sunday night, as the pair battled for yet another win, with Dollansky coming out on top to earn his second career victory at the high-banked ¼-mile. He led all 40 laps en route to his sixth A-Feature win of the season and the 27th of his career with the World of Outlaws.
The Minnesota native had a very strong Fourth of July weekend that began at Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota on Thursday night with a win, and continued with a runner-up finish at Riverside International Speedway in Arkansas on Saturday night and was capped by the win at Tri-State Speedway on Sunday night. He has 18 consecutive Top-10 finishes and also moved in the second spot in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings.
Dollansky started second on Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway in the Snap-on Tools Maxim and charged down the front straightaway and won a drag race with Steve Kinser to lead on the high side of the track entering the first and second turns. Dollansky had to endure five caution periods in addition to two red flags. He used strong restarts each time to keep Kinser at-bay.
“It was a great win,” said Dollansky. “At the start, the car felt very good to me. I just tried to stay smooth and work out way into lapped traffic. I felt good in traffic. We had a few cautions we had to overcome with restarts and it seemed like we got going pretty decent on those. I saw Steve (Kinser) there a few times and he looked like he was operating pretty well lower than I was. It seemed like after a couple of laps, I didn’t see him anymore.”
Dollansky opened a comfortable lead early in the race, when the first caution flag of the night waved on the fourth lap. He would lead on the restart, while McMahan was all over Kinser. The caution would wave again two laps later. On the ensuing restart, it took Dollansky just three laps before he was in traffic. Heavy traffic challenged the drivers for the next three laps before another caution waved on the 12th circuit, for a car that spun right in front of the leaders.
Dollansky held off a challenge by Kinser on the restart to open an eight-car length lead, only to see that evaporate when yet another caution flew on the 15th lap. On the next restart, it was Kinser looking low on Dollansky in turns one and two, while Schatz tried everything he could on the high side of the track as he challenged Kinser.
The first of two red flag flew on the 18th lap for Terry McCarl who got upside in the first and second turns. A long green flag stretch of racing would follow as Kinser and Schatz closed the gap on Dollansky, before a lap-28 caution bunched the field.
On the restart, the red flag flew for an accident involving Jac Haudenschild and Shane Stewart, who were running in the Top-10. An open red flag period allowed the crews to work on their machines.
As the laps wound down the leaders again were in traffic, giving Kinser one more Schatz at Dollansky. With just a handful of laps left Kinser was just a couple car lengths behind Dollansky, before getting held up in traffic, allowing Dollansky to pull away and win by over a second.
After nearly every restart, Kinser would charge low into the first and second turns, getting even with Dollansky a couple of times, but Dollansky would power his way off the second turn and down the back straightaway to retain the lead each time. A couple of times just as they were about to enter traffic the caution would fly. They did get a couple of chances to race in traffic, with Dollansky slicing his way through the slower machines to maintain his advantage.
“He (Kinser) was getting good restarts too and every time we restarted, I saw him on the inside of me,” Dollansky explained. “It was pretty tough to clear anyone, kind of the same thing we had last night at that race track. This Rider motor and this Maxim car worked great tonight. My crew did an excellent job and it was a great win for this Larry Woodward team.”
Prior to the 40-lap A-Feature, the crew at Tri-State Speedway reworked the track. There was two and three wide racing throughout the field, though for many guys it was tough to complete passes. Dollansky even got hung up in traffic a couple of times, as cars were able to use different lines all over the track.
“They do that a lot here and I think it really helped,” Dollansky noted about the reworking the track “I wasn’t sure at first when they went out what it would do, but it made things better. This is one of the most fun tracks you can race at. The short tracks are very racy and we always enjoy coming to them.”
After a busy Fourth of July weekend, that saw the World of Outlaws compete three times in four days and travel nearly 1200 miles, the heart of the season is at hand, with a number of big money races in the next few weeks. Dollansky is looking forward to trying to win as many races as he can, along with continuing the chase for his first World of Outlaws title.
“This is definitely the time of year that you want to have momentum going,” said the veteran driver. “This team is working right now and we have to keep on it and continue to work hard. There are a lot of races coming up and you have to keeping working every day to make sure your program stays strong. We feel good heading into the Month of Money.
After having some trouble in time trials that left him 17 the speed charts and out of the always important heat race inversion, Kinser used a strong start in the second heat race to come from the sixth starting spot to finish second and earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash, which he won to earn the pole position for the A-Feature. He had his hands full for the first two laps of the race with Randy Hannagan, the 1995 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner. He then battled with Paul McMahan and two-time defending series champion Donny Schatz.
“We recovered after qualifying bad and it was an ok night,” said the 20-time series champion. “We had a good run in the heat race and won the dash to get a good starting spot. Craig (Dollansky) beat us at the start. I just needed to tighten the car up some and take out some of the rollout off of it. I had never run as much rollout before. I thought the track would be a little heavier than what it was. Even on the red (flag) I tightened it up some. I can’t complain though.
Kinser is in the midst of a streak that has seen him pick up nine consecutive Top-10 finishes with five of those being Top-Five performances, as he looks to add to his career win total of 545 A-Feature triumphs. With his runner-up finish on Sunday night, he moved back into the fifth spot in the championship standings.
“The last few races we have been running in the Top-Five,” he said. “We’re sort of hanging around right now. We’re not as fast as the (No.) 2 or the (No.) 15 right now. We’re still not there, but we are gaining a little bit.”
Donny Schatz lined up sixth for the 40-lap contest and wound up third in the Armor All J&J. He got around Jason Meyers at the start and then was engaged in a very entertaining battle with Paul McMahan as the pair traded slide jobs a number of times. Late in the race, Schatz did everything he could to track down Kinser. In fact he bounced off the wall exiting the fourth turn with six laps to go after jumping the cushion, thus losing ground on the two leaders. He wound up third to extend his streak of being the only driver that has finished in the Top-10 in every race this season.
Paul McMahan completed a very successful first week behind the wheel of the Casey’s General Stores Maxim for car owner Lonnie Parsons, picking up a fourth-place finish on Sunday night. He worked his way into third in the early stages of the race, getting around Schatz and then Hannagan. He chased Kinser and nearly passed him a couple of times, before losing the third spot to Schatz. In four starts with the Parsons Motorsports team, he has four Top-10 finishes.
“We are getting better and better each night,” McMahan said. “We keep plugging away and are getting Top-10’s and got our first Top-Five tonight. It was a great night for us. We are going to get this Casey’s General Stores car to the front and win pretty soon.”
Joey Saldana finished fifth aboard the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI, with Sam Hafertepe Jr. finishing sixth in the G.H. Plumbing J&J to earn his 11th Top-10 finish of the season. Chad Kemenah was seventh in the Kantor Oil Company Maxim, with Daryn Pittman in eighth in the Titan Garages Maxim. Chad Hillier picked up his second Top-10 finish of the season, coming home ninth aboard the Dirt Inc. Maxim, after turning in the fifth quickest lap in qualifying. Kerry Madsen rounded out the Top-10 in the TK Concrete Maxim.
Jason Meyers, who entered the event second in the World of Outlaws championship standings and began the night by setting fast time in time trials, had some trouble early in the race which forced him to the work area, where he lost a couple of laps. He wound up 19th in the final rundown.
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Wednesday, July 9 with the 20th edition of the Brad Doty Classic, which will again be held at Limaland Motorsports Park this season.
TRI-STATE SPEEDWAY NOTEBOOK
• FAST QUALIFIER: Jason Meyers paced the 29 cars that took time with an AMB i.t. timed lap around the semi-banked 1/4-mile oval at 11.859 seconds at 75.892 mph. For his qualifying effort, Meyers earned five bonus points. The next four fastest qualifiers also earned bonus points, including: Terry McCarl (4), Donny Schatz (3), Daryn Pittman (2), and Chad Hillier (1).
