Two-time Chili Bowl Nationals champion Rico Abreu looks for more Stockton glory at the FVP Western Spring Shootout March 18 & 19

By Gary Thomas

Stockton, CA – February 29, 2016…In the brief history of the Stockton Dirt Track no driver has taken the checkered flag more than Rutherford’s Rico Abreu, who looks to defend his win from a year ago at the upcoming FVP Western Spring Shootout on Friday & Saturday March 18 & 19.

Despite competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year, Abreu will also have a healthy slate of open wheel racing on his plate, which includes a visit to the Stockton Dirt Track to take on the World of Outlaws in the FVP Western Spring Shootout. The 24-year-old will be pulling double duty at the event, also competing aboard a Winged 360 Sprint Car both nights on March 18 & 19.

“We’ve had a lot of success at Stockton,” said Abreu, who has three career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series wins. “I’m really excited about this season, having the chance to run with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is an outstanding opportunity, but still running so much on the dirt is a good thing as well. Hopefully we will have a good weekend in Stockton. It’s never easy running against the Outlaws, but I definitely have a lot of confidence knowing that we won this race last year. We look forward to seeing all the fans and hope they will pack the grandstands like usual.”

In addition to his World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win last season, Abreu has raced to three other career victories at the Stockton Dirt Track, including the 2013 Tribute to Gary Patterson with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series. He also claimed the Civil War 360 Series portion of the Tribute to GP in 2014 and captured opening night of the FVP Western Spring Shootout that same year, in what was a non-sanctioned 360 Sprint Car event.

The 2016 season has already started off solid for Abreu, racing to a big victory for the consecutive year at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This season saw a record 335 drivers compete at the Chili Bowl and Abreu captured both his preliminary night feature, along with the 55-lap finale on Saturday.

As noted, Winged 360 Sprint Cars will also race each night, paying $3,000-to-win, along with a $2000 double down bonus up for grabs if someone sweeps the weekend. The 360 Dash both nights will also feature $1000 distributed to the top three finishers. The winner will receive $500, second place $300 & third place will score $200. Thanks to Reeve’s Sand & Gravel, Sunny Valley Smoked Meats, the San Joaquin Asparagus Festival & Noceti Group Inc. for the extra Dash money.
