Nationals Disappointment: Elite Racing comes up short at Knoxville Nationals
“Ones greatest success comes after their biggest disappointment” (Henry Beecher). Unlike the year before, Jason Meyers and his whole Elite Racing team were in prime position to win the biggest race of the season. Unfortunately Meyers’ night in his #14 Allstar Performance KPC, ended about 20 laps too early.
The biggest week of racing in the World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Series occurs every August in the small town of Knoxville, Iowa, and the results are usually heard around the world. The 51st running of the Goodyear Knoxville Nationals concluded late Saturday night when Tony Stewart Racing’s (TSR) Donny Schatz took the checkered flag in the 50-lap main event. The fact that Schatz earned the victory shouldn’t surprise many. It was his fifth in the last six years and also his 10th finish of first or second in the last 12 Nationals. However, it was the manner in which he earned it. The four-time WoO champion was forced to start the TSR No. 15 STP/Armor All/ Chevrolet J&J 13th because of an engine failure in Wednesday night’s opening preliminary feature. Undeterred, Schatz was the star of the show, moving forward quickly and taking the lead on lap 14. Once in front, the Fargo, N.D., racer drove a perfect race to earn his 110th career WoO A-Feature win.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series is set to invade the Wolverine State this weekend for a huge doubleheader on Friday night (Aug. 19) at Winston Speedway in Rothbury and Saturday evening (Aug. 20) at Merritt Raceway in Lake City – and naturally, Pinconning, Mich.’s VanWormer feels a special duty to defend his turf against the national tour’s stars.
World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at a Glance: ‘Great Northern Tour’ kicks off at River Cities Speedway and Huset’s Speedway
CONCORD, N.C. – Aug. 14, 2011 – North Dakota’s Donny Schatz will ride the momentum from his 51st Goodyear Knoxville Nationals championship into World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series events at River Cities Speedway on Friday, Aug. 19, in Grand Forks, N.D., and Huset’s Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 20, in Brandon, S.D., to launch the Great Northern Tour, which also includes races on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., and Aug. 26-27 at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.
