Altoona, IA Tuesdays with TMAC – Nowhere But Up From Here!
By T-Mac Motorsports PR

There have been better weekends for the McCarl family. From broken motors, to a weathered out show in Missouri, to a hard flip at Huset’s, it couldn’t have been much worse. Sprint car driver Terry McCarl took a blow with his race results at Knoxville and Huset’s, but Terry McCarl the promoter took a hit as well when strong spring Missouri storms postponed the World of Outlaws show at US36 Raceway near Cameron on Friday.

The Missouri High Banked Nationals have been rescheduled for Friday, September 12. “At least we were able to reschedule,” says the Altoona, Iowa native. “The track was in great shape on Friday. Unfortunately, the pits were bad, and the parking area was worse. There was just no place for people to park.”

From the start on Saturday night, a WoO homecoming at the Knoxville Raceway went sour for TMAC. “The motor didn’t run all night,” he says. “The last few times we’ve put it in, it has been vibrating. We think the fuel is too rich to it and it is detonating. We didn’t qualify well (19th), but I knew in the heat race when I pushed off that I probably wouldn’t finish it. It sounded like a tractor. The car was good, we got up into third, and if the motor was running, we may have had a shot at second place and the dash.”

TMAC dropped out of the heat while running fourth, and headed for the B main, which he won despite smoke emanating from the powerplant. “We changed the fuel a bit for the B and it was a little better,” he says. “It was still vibrating pretty good come feature time, and I pulled it in before it got too traumatic. It was smoking all night and blowing oil everywhere. It was hard to tell where it was coming from…maybe a cracked piston.” The DNF dropped TMAC into eighth in the WoO point standings as the series heads to the Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Illinois and Paducah International Raceway in Paducah, Kentucky this weekend.

The six-time Huset’s Speedway champion decided to try his luck on Sunday night at the track he holds the all-time mark for in wins. He brought an old co-pilot and mechanic with him. “We brought (father) Lenard up to help us with the Huset’s trip,” he says. “He had the motor running great.”

Things went fine in time trials and the heat (2nd). He lined up third in the starting grid for the 25-lap event. “It was a crazy start to the feature,” TMAC relates. “Marlon Jones did three wheelies in front of us to start, and I was kind of screwed up going into one and spun out. I thought, ‘Well we’re going to put a show on for the fans like last year’ (he came from the back to win last season).”

Three laps in, he found a hole in turn four and flipped hard in the Big Game Treestands #24, putting an end to the forgetful weekend. “A rut appeared in turns three and four, and looking at it later, it was unbelievable,” he says. “I didn’t know what hit me. The right front wheel went right into that hole and stopped. It was kind of like hitting something on a bicycle and flying off the front of the handlebars. It junked the car pretty good.”

There’s nowhere to go, but up from here!

In"Terry"gation

Dennis of Montezuma, IA asks: Terry, it must be exciting to think that you will be around racing for years to come with your two boys entering into the sprint car ranks. How have you helped them? What pitfalls will you show them to steer clear of? What does Lori have to say about this future?

TMAC Answers: Of course, I have a lot to tell them, but I don’t know how much they’ll listen. Hopefully, they’ll do things a little better than me, and smarter than me. Sponsors are the key. It doesn’t matter how much talent you have, if you don’t have the money to go race. They’ve had the opportunity to see all sides of it, even the promotion side, so they’ve grown up around it and probably think it’s normal and how everybody lives. More than anything, I hope they learn the business end of it. Lori just takes it a day at a time! The hardest thing for me, has been watching Austin this year. That’s tough and she’s used to that. I think it will be interesting when Carson starts in the sprint cars, and I’ll probably still be around, so there will be three of us. That might be interesting for the fans.

Today in TMAC History!

On this date in 1992, TMAC registered his best finish in his low budget rookie season with the World of Outlaws at Tri-City Speedway. He finished fourth in the Offill #88 behind Steve Kinser, Dave Blaney and Johnny Herrera. Stevie Smith was fifth followed by Andy Hillenburg, Sammy Swindell, Bobby Davis Jr., Donnie Kreitz Jr. and Kenny Jacobs. TMAC also had a win at Knoxville in the Vermeer #55 in 2000 on this day.
